As with every country in the world, COVID-19 has impacted entrepreneurs severely. Mana aims to empower women entrepreneurs both in South Africa and the United States through the purchase of a gift box subscription.
Mana Boxes was created to give mana – a source of daily living, necessity and sustenance – to the box maker and the receiver.
Mana boxes are layered with love and contain gorgeous handmade South African gifts – each with a story. The stories reveal the hardships of women in stark communities who make items to sustain themselves. They are about the businesses that employ these women and the unanticipated impact of COVID-19. They are about the sourcing of material – such as single-use plastic to make fashion products. And jewelry made from the steel fence that surrounded the Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela was held captive.
Mana boxes have been compiled for subscriptions distributed to the United States. They are designed to give women a sustainable resource for daily living. This project enables women to help women artisans and women in business in communities impacted by COVID-19. For the recipient, the mana gift will remain a mystery until it is opened. Each box is an exquisite surprise. Its content, the rich stories, the imagery of its creators are beautifully woven together – to sustain the giver and the recipient.
Mana is being launched through Kickstarter, a financial backing platform to get new projects off the ground. Each Kickstarter project sets its own budget based on the company’s financial needs. We only have 30 days to reach the funding goal. If the goal isn’t met, the money is refunded. We need your support to reach our goal when Mana launches.
